Waterloo International Master’s Award of Excellence

The University of Waterloo has brought this scholarship scheme into existence. The aim of the Waterloo International Master’s Award of Excellence is to help Master’s students who will be undergoing researches in the university but lack finances.

In 1957, the University of Waterloo opened its doors to 74 engineering students with co-operative education as its cornerstone.

Today, with more than 42,000+ students attending annually, Waterloo is #1 in Canada for experiential learning and employer-student connections.

Hence, the invention of the Waterloo International Master’s Award of Excellence. This scholarship scheme will help more graduates be experimental. The University of Waterloo continues to spur innovation to solve problems on a global scale. The university of waterloo is very meticulous in how they proceed with the scholarship. Faculties will nominate eligible students based on the Faculty’s award allocation.

Also, the scholarship is meant for applicants who have academically excelled and have maintained it. They also have to be at the University of Waterloo. Students would be selected randomly based on their performance in their application for admission. However, it is not stated how many people have been privileged enough to win this scholarship scheme.


The host university is the University of Waterloo in Canada. That means all students will have to be in Canada during the time of the scholarship. Also, the Waterloo International Master’s Award of Excellence is for international students who cannot financially sponsor themselves through school.

Level of Study/Field of Study

The Waterloo International Master’s Award of Excellence is strictly for those willing to do a research-based Master’s degree. Having known how prestigious the University of Waterloo is, they cut across every field of study. They offer different courses from engineering to arts to sciences etc.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be International students with a valid Canadian study permit who are registered full-time and assessed international tuition fees. The scholarship will normally be awarded to Master’s degree students in research-based programs (thesis or major research paper). However, only students entering the first term of their program are eligible. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence through criteria established by the Faculty and must meet the academic progress requirements of their program and not have outstanding probationary admission requirements.

In addition, this scholarship can run concurrently with other scholarship schemes. Hence, applicants can have internal or external scholarships while they have this one.

Scholarship Value

The scholarship award is valued at $2,500 per term for a maximum of 5 terms.

Students will be automatically considered for this award based on their application for admission; hence no separate scholarship application is required. Departments and/or Faculties will select the students and nominate them for the scholarship. The application deadline for most Master’s programs commencing September 2021 falls within January to February 2021.
